About
Founded in 2017, doubleA develops and produces bold, human, boundary-crossing music theater, opera and immersive work by Michel van der Aa. Every work starts with Michel: his music, his questions, his ideas. Our team builds it, produces it and carries it into the world.
What makes us human? How is technology changing humanity? In our multidisciplinary work, we address the major themes of the digital age and bring to life existential questions at the boundary between humans, technology and consciousness. Our work plays with the borders between memory and oblivion, reality and illusion, life and death.
We draw on current and future social and technological developments, which we always approach through human stories and emotions. Our work therefore has a humanistic angle and is strongly inspired by society. We place you inside the story rather than in front of it, and ask questions rather than answer them all, so that you can develop your own insights and relate personally to what you see.
Our work is developed in international co-production and has been performed in over 45 countries. Increasingly, doubleA acts as the main producer, which lets us keep ownership of our productions. Among our productions are the award-winning film opera Upload, with Dutch National Opera & Ballet, and the VR opera installation From Dust, which won Best Immersive Work at the Cannes International Film Festival in 2025.
The work takes many forms. At its core are opera and music theater for the stage. Alongside them we make VR and immersive work, including VR Opera and HERE, our Immersive Music Theater Platform; concert music for instruments and voices; documentary and media, such as the doubleA tapes and a podcast; film versions that give staged works a wider home; and an archive that preserves and restores past works.
We care how the work is made. Our environmental policy describes how we reduce the footprint of our productions and tours, and our technology policy describes how we work with new technology, including AI, in an ethical way.
doubleA receives multi-year support from the Performing Arts Fund NL, and is also supported by Ammodo and the Gieskes-Strijbis Fonds. We work closely with Michel's general manager, Sharon Zhu, and with his publisher, Boosey & Hawkes.
